Gexa Energy Review 2026
Gexa Energy has been serving Texas electricity customers since 2002, making it one of the original retail electricity providers when the state’s market opened to competition. Now owned by NextEra Energy, the world’s largest generator of renewable energy, Gexa has committed to 100% renewable energy across all residential plans since 2020. Customer sentiment is strong, with a 4.8-star rating and an NPS score of 78, indicating high satisfaction. However, their 127 PUC complaints over the past 12 months sits slightly above the industry average of 120, and their billing clarity score of 47/100 suggests room for improvement in helping customers understand their charges.

Positive Experiences
“Edgar R was absolutely amazing and extremely helpful this morning. He spent a full hour walking me through my electricity plan, answering every question I had, and making sure I fully understood my options. He was patient, professional, and never rushed me. You can tell he truly cares about helping customers and doing his job well. Because of Edgar, I feel much more confident about my electricity plan. Thank you so much for the excellent service!”
“Signing up with Gexa Energy was easy and efficient with Jaime. He was kind, pleasant and ready to explain conditions I was confused about or had questions on. Would definitely recommend Gexa Energy to anyone that needs an energy company to sign up with.”
“I have been with them for 2 years and will renew again. My customer service rep was great and broke down my monthly usage over the past 2 years to help me pick the best renewal plan.”
“Had a nice gentleman by the name of Daniel who explained everything to me after I was complaining about my bill. He walked me through it and I renewed my plan at a cheaper rate. Honestly great help!”
“Great customer service! We’re moving now and are genuinely sad to say goodbye to Gexa. Gexa is affordable, renewable, and was there for us when we were financially limited. Highly recommend!”
Critical Feedback
“I just switched from Reliant thinking I was getting a cheaper rate since my contract expired. I found Gexa online with the same rate I was paying before. I’ve been paying $160 max with Reliant and live alone in a house. My first bill was over $200, and I thought okay, maybe it’s just the first time. But no, now I’m being charged over $300 for my second bill. I feel like I was scammed. Don’t get Gexa, take it from me.”
“Run, don’t walk! I got my first bill of $188 for an apartment, not to mention a delivery charge of $54. I left Just Energy to come to Gexa Energy – worst mistake of my life. Yes, all electricity companies charge a delivery fee, but $54? People in houses don’t pay that much. I’ll pay the $150 termination fee because there’s no way I’m paying an almost $200 electricity bill.”
“A rep called to inform me my rates were about to go up from 13.2 to 23.3 if I kept my old plan, so I was offered a two-year plan. I was having trouble understanding what she was saying and she wasn’t understanding me. Reading from her script, it was like talking to a robot that got lost when I asked questions, which frustrated both of us. We finally agreed but I had to accept higher rates.”
FINAL VERDICT
Our Recommendation
Gexa Energy: Recommended
Strong choice for renewable energy seekers
Gexa Energy earns our recommendation as a solid choice for Texas electricity customers, particularly those prioritizing renewable energy. As a pioneer in Texas green energy since 2002 and now backed by NextEra Energy, the company brings credibility and stability to the market. Customer sentiment is notably strong, with an impressive 4.8-star rating and a True NPS of 78, indicating high satisfaction and loyalty. The customer service score of 81/100 reflects responsive support. However, there are areas for improvement: the billing clarity score of 47/100 suggests some customers find invoices confusing, and PUC complaints (127) sit slightly above the industry average of 120—worth monitoring but not alarming. Overall, Gexa delivers competitive rates with a genuine renewable commitment, making it a compelling option for eco-conscious Texans who don’t mind occasionally reviewing their bills for accuracy.

Our Methodology
How We Calculate NPS Scores
Our proprietary scoring system analyzes thousands of customer reviews to provide an unbiased assessment of each electricity provider.
- Data Source: Online Reviews from verified customers
- AI Analysis: We analyze each review to distill sentiment and filter out incentivized reviews, bot-generated content, and review bombing attempts
- True NPS Calculation: We calculate Net Promoter Score as (% Promoters) – (% Detractors), where Promoters rate 9-10 and Detractors rate 1-6
- Star Rating: NPS scores are mapped to a 3.0-5.0 star scale for intuitive comparison
About “Billing Clarity” Scores
This score measures how clearly a provider communicates billing to customers—not billing accuracy. Texas electricity providers have robust, audited billing systems that are highly accurate.
- What we measure: Clarity of bill statements, proactive notifications, explanation of credits and charges, time-of-use rate communication
- Why it matters: Customers often report confusion about bills even when charges are correct—this score reflects how well providers help customers understand their bills
- PUC “billing complaints”: Most are about confusing statements or unexpected (but legitimate) charges, not actual billing errors
Pricing Data Collection
We collect electricity plan pricing directly from official sources to ensure accuracy.
- Data Source: ComparePower, the original Texas electricity consumer advocate
- Update Frequency: Prices are synced daily from all 5 TDSP territories
- Usage Levels: We display pricing at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh/month to show how rates vary by consumption
- Coverage: All 17 retail electricity providers in the Texas deregulated market
PUC Complaint Data
Complaint data provides insight into provider accountability and customer issues.
- Data Source: Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) official complaint records
- History: 46+ months of historical complaint data (January 2022 – Present)
- Categories: Billing, Slamming/Cramming, Quality of Service, Disconnection, and Other
- Update Frequency: Monthly updates as new PUC data becomes available
